The White Wog

Born in Melbourne Australia in 1956 to immigrant parents from Lithuania.

First language Lithuanian but replaced quite quickly by the local English.

Raised with a tradition of belief in the homeland would be free from Soviet occupation but never believing it to be possible: little country, big regime.

Schooling on the Northern outskirts of a blue-collar area where wogs were ridiculed but were plenty. I was blonde and considered OK at first but the name pushed me back to wog status, the White Wog.

The town was on the border of farmland and new town so had a chance to explore trees, creeks and wind-swept vistas but that soon changed with  modernisation. Outdoor dunnies were soon to be replaced with a sewerage system, the dynamiting of trenches came close to our back door – Mr Stowe, our local Dunny Man, no longer ran the gauntle of a rusted dunny bucket spilling over his head and we welcomed the warmth of a new seat without spider bites.

The local Primary school with the excellent Mr Cook and our local greasy Fish & Chip shop run by the monstrous toothy mad grinning “George the Greek” gave way to a local High school which never game me a challenge except for Woodworking class with patient Mr Coffey. Sport was too easy but I always came runner-up to one kid called Roy Ince (who always beats me by an Inch) as I did in class with the two bright girls, Christine and Deborah. Yet a scholarship sent me off to University High School for Year 3 (modern Year 9) where I distracted myself with everything new. Sport was replaced by cigarettes and academia by the dream of rebellion which came at the start of the Moratoriums, and the avoidance of conscription. Bad Life was always just a miss away, and I was at a cross-road.

Studied electronic music at Melbourne University with Peter Touhordin, along with electronic music studies with Felix Werder at the City Adult education classes. Creative incursions began with a music score for the ABC in a Maths program, a music score for a small theatrical production, keyboards in a loungeroom band or two, some Sunday performances for the ABC’s Sunday Experimental music shows on its National Radio, amongst other public exposures kept the music happening.

Took a Foundation Year at Prahran College in Art followed by Film and TV studies at Melbourne Teachers College then went looking for work which never came through due to a downturn in the industry. My experimental films were very much experiments in moving film, shot on poor quality Super-8 for effect and budget. A scratch film on 16mm emulsion brought animation into light and a stop-motion picture of a single sheet of paper with charcoal drawing and erasure about the condition of war was brought back to life for me years later when I came across William Kentridge’s incredible charcoal animations. Where I had stopped, he had exploded.

Began as a cartoonist for the City Extra, and went freelance for the advertising industry, filling in with part-time jobs and whatever I could muster to get through the college years but finally fell over a cliff and into the arms of the Public Service. Here I ran a copying/duplication service for the Federal government in our town. This was remarkably a great place to experiment with the new technologies of Xerox machines, old Gestaetners and whatever made a copy at the time. Computers were precious locked rooms in those days, a PC had not yet been conceived.

Unfulfilled, I left the comfort of the Public Service, I found a job at the latest thing to hit town, as computer graphic artist with Genigraphics Corporation machines producing colour 35mm slides for the presentation industry. Here was the forerunner before Apples and IBMs and when it began to dull me, I went freelance creating adverts, corporate identity and pamphlet layouts. Work as a freelancer just never took off, it left me living off a banana and a roll for lunch each day. So i went back to working for the man until I became a competitor in the 35mm field, an industry that gave me a chance to build a home and raise a family. Graphics for the other prople never left enough time to explore my own heart until eventually Covid shut it down for good and freed me to create.

Why do we create? The Devil knows…

Heaven? Well that’s where you do what ever you damn like.”

Painting with sound.

I’ve always looked at my music as soundscapes, ideal for moving imagery, sound for films to be made.
The electronic pieces are always improvisations as re-constructing mood and texture is never the same. Every performance is unique as the temperment of a machine with knobs is never the same either. There may be similar sounds but always there are new collisions that drive the tempo, rhythm and mood in a completely different direction,

Here is my folio of music, including piano and kanklės pieces alomng with the electronic soundscapes via Mixcloud.com/moondoogas
